I've come across Maxine Hong Kingston's novel Tripmaster Monkey and I'm really enjoying it. Set in San Francisco, fun writing style, lots of literary beat references. And it describes the basement in City Lights Bookstore and I am so in love with that! So Thanks to Maxine for her amazing work!

Thu, January 10, 2008 - 6:36 PMI think one of the best scenes is in The Dharma Bums, where the gang is all at this poetry reading in San Fran. He compares it to a Charlie Bird Parker bebop solo i think he does. Mad, oh so mad!!! -

Re: Cool Beat Novel!
Thu, January 24, 2008 - 10:32 AMI just finished reading Tripmaster Monkey. I thought her description of his work struggles was interesting, and I really appreciated seeing the perspective of fifth generation Chinese-Americans being viewed as "outsiders", the irony is pretty rich. I'm not sure I really enjoy her style of writing but I'm going to try some of her other novels. -
